History
Campesinos Unidos, Inc. (CUI), is a private, non-profit organization (501c3), dedicated to the service of disadvantaged persons residing in its three-county area of operation. Its delivery region includes the Imperial, Riverside and San Diego counties. Incorporated in 1971, the agency has acted as both a prime sponsor and subcontractor of numerous Federal, State and Local entitlement programs serving the rural poor. Currently, CUI provides a large Child Development-Head Start program, Employment-Training projects, a Self-Help Housing effort, and energy assistance services within its sphere of operation.
In June 1989, CUI became Imperial County’s designated Community Action Agency by the California Department of Economic Opportunity. This transcendental occasion made CUI a stronger, more vigorous and better representative comprised of 14 member in its Board of Directors, which in turn, is made up of three (3) one-third (1/3) membership; 1/3 Public Representatives; 1/3 Poor or Disadvantaged Representatives; and 1/3 Representatives of business, labor, religious, education, or other interest groups in the community. The CUI Board of Directors is composed entirely of persons who reside within the communities from which they are elected.
A majority of CUI personnel have strong private and public business backgrounds. They possess requisite education, employment experience, motivation and sensitivity to the target population to enhance CUI’s area offices, are nearly 90 percent minority persons, with Mexican-American, Blacks, Asians and Caucasians represented.
